The English context is magic.
Listen to the lesson read by a native speaker:
Any language starts with grammar. Fortunately (к счастью), the English grammar is simple. I’m not talking about the advanced grammar that you need to take some exams. Of course, it’d not be so easy. I mean the basis of grammar that you need for communications.
Let’s think about a foreigner in an English speaking country one more time. If he lives there for a couple of months he’ll start speaking English. If he lives there for half a year, he’ll speak English very fluently. He doesn’t learn grammar. He’s just listening other people, reading different things in English and learning grammar through the context (через контекст).
Another example. Think of kids. How do they learn languages? Do they learn grammar? 🙂 You can’t explain to a child when he should use “do” or “does”. He doesn’t really need it. He can just listen to his parents and learn grammar through the context.
The power of context.
The English context is powerful. It’s your best helper in learning grammar. If you use it the right way, you can improve grammar easily. One more good thing of learning grammar in context is that it’s fun! You’ll really enjoy studying and that’s why you’ll make fast progress!
Let’s see how it works. Here is a short story in English written by native speakers. It’s very important to use learning materials from natives.
Hungry for Hot Dogs.
He opens the refrigerator. He looks inside the refrigerator. He is hungry. He wants something to eat. He sees a package. It is a package of hot dogs. Six hot dogs are in the package. He takes two hot dogs out of the package. He closes the refrigerator. He puts the hot dogs on a plate.
Listen to it as many times as you need. This story is written in Present Simple. Now, let’s rewrite it in Past Simple:
He opened the refrigerator. He looked inside the refrigerator. He was hungry. He wanted something to eat. He saw a package. It was a package of hot dogs. Six hot dogs were in the package. He took two hot dogs out of the package. He closed the refrigerator. He put the hot dogs on a plate.
Your homework will be to rewrite this story in the Future Simple tense!
Working with English short stories is a very pleasant and effective way to improve grammar. It also improves your vocabulary and listening. Forget about grammar exercises from textbooks. Keep working with short stories the way I’ve shown you:
- Listen to a story as many times as you need.
- Translate it into your language.
- Read it out loud paying attention to (обращая внимание на) your pronunciation and intonation. Try to be like a native.
- Retell and rewrite (перескажите и перепишите) the story in the Past Simple tense.
- Retell and rewrite the story in the Future Simple tense.
The more you practice this way the better your grammar becomes. In BFTC we work with short stories a lot. I guide you and help you to make each lesson as effective as it possible.
